No…it isn’t laced with preservatives so that it will last until Thanksgiving. I have been taking a new approach to Thanksgiving. For years I would make a hefty amount of food. We would not only over eat on Thanksgiving but also have left overs for days. Oftentimes some of this food went to waste. I really hate being wasteful, yet I cannot make peace with having only one meat, one starch, and one vegetable for Thanksgiving. Well, I am fine with one meat. What is a woman to do?
I started looking at Thanksgiving food differently. I realized that my craving for Thanksgiving food starts in the fall. So instead of waiting for Thanksgiving to roll around to eat traditional Thanksgiving flavors, I started baking some of the Thanksgiving food that I love in the fall. I started with a maple bourbon pecan pie in September. In October, I made a pumpkin spice cake with chocolate glaze. Now, right before Thanksgiving, I whipped up an sour cream-apple pie.
So what am I going to bake for Thanksgiving? Nothing. I am buying a pie from a local bakery. I selected a cranberry custard pie. I have never had a cranberry custard pie before and I have been craving custard lately so this should hit the spot. I have enough cooking going on in the kitchen. I want to spend time with my family on Thanksgiving… I do not want my children’s sole memory of Thanksgiving is their mother never leaving the kitchen.
